Brief Introduction of South Suburban District

    Located in the northern part of Datong basin, South Suburban District is one of suburban district of Datong, a famous coal capital. There are numerous factories and mines in it, such as famous Datong Coal Mine Group and Yungang Grottoes. The region covers an area of 1,050 square kilometers, of which 387000 mu of cultivated land. There are three towns, seven townships, and 190 villages under its jurisdiction. The total population is 270,000 people. The terrain is high in northwest, low in southeast, with the average elevation of 1,250 meters. It is a semi-arid area with warm climate, it’s cold in winter and strong wind in spring with less rain and snow. The lowest temperature is -29 ° C in January. The highest temperature is 37.7 ° C (in July). The annual mean temperature is 6.4 ° C, with the average precipitation of 395 mm, frost-free period of 125 days.
    South Suburban District is rich in natural resources and has convenient transportation. The main resources are coal, limestone, kaolin hard rock, basalt, marble, dolomite, quartz stones and graphite. It is particularly rich in coal reserves. The proven reserves of Datong Coal are over 16 billion tons. The geological coal reserves are 700 million tons in South Suburban District, recoverable reserves of 490 million tons with shallow coal layer, good quality and high calorific capacity (more than 7,000 calories), low ash, low sulfur and it’s easy to mine. Limestone reserves are 410 million tons, 400 million cubic meters of marble, kaolinite, 660 million tons, Dolomite 53.53 million tons and 39.79 million tons of graphite. It has convenient communication and transportation such as Beijing—Baotou, Datong—Pulingdu, Datong—Qinghuangdao, Dazhun four railway lines, Gaoshan, Wangcun two extensions and many special rail lines. There are 35 highways crisscrossing at the district such as Datong--tanggu, Datong--Yuncheng, Datong—Beijing Datong—Fengzhen (Fengzhen to Hohhot) and so on. It’s the transportation hub of Shanxi, Hebei and Mongolia, and one of the commodity distribution centers. The three highways, Beijing--Datong, Datong—Yuncheng, Dezhou—Datong shorten the distance between Datong to Beijing, Taiyuan, Hohhot (about three hours’ drive).
    Since reform and opening up, the government of South Suburban District focuses on taking full use of resources advantages, mainly coal production, accumulating primitive capital, greatly developing township enterprises. It initially formed a complete industrial pattern including coal as a leader, transportation, building materials, machinery processing, metallurgical industry, catering services, and feed processing industries and so on. There are a large number of high quality products famous at home and abroad such as activated carbon, graphite, ferrosilicon, silicon manganese, calcium carbide, light calcium carbonate, silicate, corn starch, pure benzene, toluene, xylene, sodium sulfide, an organic fertilizer and so on. In recent years, the government of South Suburban District formulated a series of preferential policies in investment, adjusting industrial structure, developing the private economy and the export-oriented economy, to actively improve its investment environment, build Tashan, Pingwang, Hanling, Shuiposi four Industrial Parks.
    A large number of enterprises enter the district which make full use of our region's resources, location, and other advantages to develop advantage projects, form a number of new large-scale, high-tech, low environmental pollution and good benefits projects relating to deep processing of coal industry, coal chemical industry, coal-fired electricity plant, building materials, metallurgy, machinery manufacturing, chemical industry, trade and logistics, tourism, agricultural and livestock products processing. In adjusting industrial structure the government encourages the development of coal-based industries into appreciation, non-coal industries, and high-tech industries. Currently, there are a group of kaolin, silica, magnesium alloys, industrial silicon, light industry products, and other non-coal processing enterprises.
