Datong County

    Datong County is located in east of Datong, it is 28km form Datong center. With the new urban area’s building, it has the unique location advantage. The county has 7 countrysides, 3 towns and three street representative agents, there are 189 villages, 16 resident committees, there is a population of 166,195 dwellers, in which, there are 133,358 farmers, accounted for 81.53% of whole population, non-agriculture population is 30,967, accounted for 18.47% of whole population.     The county is situated at 113o 20’---113o 50’ east longitude and 39o43’---40o16’ north latitude, the longest distance from north to south is 60 km, the widest distance from north to south is 45km, the average height above sea level is 1040m, the non-frost period is about 132 days, annual average rainfall is 386.8mm. the main farm produce is maize, corn, millet, potato, melons. The special farm produce is yellow lily, green bean, apricot, betelnut, the main industrial products are activated carbon, industrial silicon, cement and machinery bricks.

    Datong county’s tourism resource is abundant, the Cailiang Mountain, which is located at the north of county, with 2144m the highest peak which exceeds 100m over Heng Mountain. The old saying goes “ the north fan\mouse mountain, Heng Mountain, is several ten thousand high, but it does not catch the half hill of Cailiang Mountain”. In ancient times, the peak is snow all year, in modern, it snows in June. Therefore Cailiang snow is one of Datong eight famous landscapes , which was written in history books. The sleeping Buddha lay in south of the county is on its back which connects to the hightest peaks of Matou Mountain, Dian Mountain, Xiaoquan Mountain and Madao Mountain, its gesture is real and body proportion is proper and it has high exploitation value. Datong volcano cluster lies in north-east of Datong county is the most typical volcano distributing area in mainland, it is the rare natural heritage in east Asia continent it began from middle Pleistocene to late Pleistocene. It means it occurred during 300 thousands years from 400 thousand years to 100 thousand yeas ago. There are more than 30 volcano piles distribute 1000-1500m above sea level, of which, the shape perfect Golden Mountain like Fuji mountain with 1429.8 m above sea level is the best tour scene. Haotian temple located in the peak of Haotian volcano pile is prior to Huangyan temple. It was destroyed during “culture revolution” and reconstructed in 1990. it is as famous as Datong Huayan temple.
